A milonga workshop

A while back we were asked to teach a milonga workshop, and we were fortunate to rent the Shalimar Room above Nirvana Restaurant in New Orleans. Our approach to dancing milonga is to respect the rhythm, to make good use of half steps, and above all to understand the importance of keeping the woman’s back to the outside of the dance floor as much as possible. We were lucky to have had early exposure to excellent milonga dancers in Buenos Aires, and learned that many milonga dancers make it their specialty, and very few tango dancers can really dance a milonga that is not a “happy” tango.

Regardless, the dance of milonga is very challenging because it demands respect for the rhythm and positive grounding and weight changes.
